That's an excellent point - there are some sites that I do totally avoid the comments on, because I know they will be overwhelmingly annoying and trollish. And if a comment thread makes me swear more than twice, I'll usually drop it!

Agree totally. One of the things I love about Twitter is now that I'm following so many people, from various social circles/spheres of interest, I get to see all sorts of things I'd probably never have stumbled across in my pre-Twitter days, and can happily ignore all the things I really don't want to read :)

I also like reading the comments, but it depends on the site. I tend to avoid unless I know it's a site that is either a) well-moderated, b) has a respectful community of contributors that can make sensible comments and disagree without it getting ugly, or c) preferably both! That's why I don't often read the comments on the Guardian website - too many trolls, sadly.

That's a really good idea! Then you have a reminder that you're not to open your emails, and a task you can dive straight into without giving yourself the chance to wonder what to do. I'll give it a go!

Brilliant post! Your idea for not checking e-mail first thing is a bit of a revelation to me. I'm also pretty unproductive first thing, so I might just have to try this. I think I will try to decide on a task before leaving the previous day, and maybe leave it on my keyboard - reducing both the chances of habit kicking in, and the opportunity for opening Outlook to see what tasks are there...

Everyone says it's a very 'Sue' assignment! It was really interesting one to do.

Yes, the titles should link to the assignments in dropbox - you shouldn't need a dropbox account to see them in your browser, but maybe I've done something wrong...

As soon as I saw the assignment on ID cards I thought of Susan Hornby. I graduated in 2006 and I still miss MMU.
Am I being dim - are the titles links to the actual assignments?

MMU have a module on 'designing online learning', which includes some pedagogical practice - but it's optional, and I didn't take it. Don't know about other courses, but agree it would be useful!

Interesting to see the range of topics covered by library programmes. I've thought for a while now that a unit on educational practice would have been helpful - mostly as I now work in HE but thinking about it, every library sector I've worked in has involved some form of user education. Would be interested to know if folks are aware of this being included on any current programmes?
