Gosh! Now that’s a really heroic move – and I bet the audience appreciated it! Really good to know that you were able to condense it down to those two key points – I think that’s probably a good ‘health check’ for a talk – if you can’t sum it up in a couple of main points, then you’re probably trying to say too much…

That reminds of the time I was closing a talk, and the previous speaker ran over by 20 minutes, leaving me five instead of the planned 25.

I also sat with growing panic as my time-slot slipped away. In the end I got rid of all my slides and boiled my talk down to two important points I wanted to make.

I knew I couldn’t keep my audience when there were filled glasses of wine waiting to be drunk directly behind them.
